Canopy Beds: Giving the Bed a Room Inside the Room
A canopy bed changes a bedroom more than any other piece of furniture, because it does not just occupy floor space, it occupies height. Four posts and a surrounding frame draw an edge in mid air and carve a second, smaller room out of the first. That is where the effect comes from, and it is also why choosing a canopy bed is less a question of style than a question of measurements. Two Constructions: Four Poster Frame or Wall Mounted Canopy
The collection reaches the same picture along two routes. On a four poster bed the superstructure is part of the frame: four posts carry a rail from which curtains or a fabric ceiling can be hung, the bed stands on its own and needs no wall. The wall mounted canopy does the opposite, it is fixed above the headboard and lets the fabric fall to the sides. Both create the same sense of shelter, but the second one needs a solid wall behind the bed.
Height First: What the Ceiling Decides
Before you think about colour and style, measure the ceiling. Our canopy beds stand between 200 and 236 cm tall: the country models at 200 cm, the brown solid wood model at 236 cm, the Chinese style baroque model at 234 cm. Leave at least ten to fifteen centimetres of air above the frame, otherwise the structure looks pressed down rather than airy, and curtains can no longer hang properly. In a room with the usual 250 cm ceiling that already narrows the choice, in a period building with three metres or more everything stays open. Widths from 160 to 200 Centimetres
The country models in natural and in black come in three widths: 160, 180 and 200 cm, at a length of 200 cm. That lets you fit a room exactly instead of settling for one standard size. The luxury models are built around fixed mattress sizes: 180 x 210 cm for the natural model with an external footprint of 199.5 x 228.5 cm, and 180 x 200 cm for the brown solid wood bed at 191 x 214 cm. The baroque sets are made for mattresses of 200 x 200 cm. When planning the position, allow around twenty centimetres more than the mattress size, the frame always projects beyond it.
Oak, Mindi Wood, Walnut and Ebony
The material decides both weight and character. Oak carries the black country beds, its grain reads clearly through the colour. Mindi wood with oak veneer stands behind the natural luxury model, a calm and light version without ornament. The Italian sets work in walnut and, in the most elaborate case, in ebony with lemon wood, all carved by hand. The brown solid wood bed adds a panel of figured burl wood in the headboard, framed by turned posts. Every model is built for decades of use rather than for a season.
From Country House to Italian Baroque
The stylistic range is wide. Quietest are the two country models with their straight posts and flat headboard, in natural grey oiled or in black, and the black one can be ordered in other colours on request. Beside them stands the clear, light natural luxury bed, whose headboard sits flush inside the frame. Things get considerably louder with the Chinese style baroque canopy bed in black and gold, which lays fine chinoiserie painting across the surfaces. For Hotels, Suites and Your Own Bedroom
In hotels and holiday villas the canopy bed is the piece that lifts one room above the others, it alone carries the difference between a standard room and a suite. At home the reason is usually different: a large bedroom quickly looks empty without height, and a canopy bed fills that emptiness without changing the floor plan. In both cases the same advice applies before you order: measure the ceiling, allow twenty centimetres around the footprint, and check the route through doors and stairwells, because the posts arrive at full length.
